Firefighter fund for scholarships

Bird carvingMCKENZIE BRIDGE: Once again, the staff of the McKenzie River Ranger District will be raising funds for a scholarship fund honoring fallen firefighters. Doug Dunbar and 13 other crew members were killed in a tragic fire in Colorado 21 years ago. Doug was a McKenzie High School graduate and the son of Sandy Dunbar and former McKenzie District Ranger, Randy Dunbar.
The scholarship is awarded each year to a college bound senior at the McKenzie High. Doug was fighting fires to help pay his way through college.

Doug’s father, Randy is now retired and has taken up wood carving. He is donating a beautifully hand carved American Kestrel to be raffled off to raise funds for the scholarship.
The piece was carved from one piece of Tupelo wood and is perched on several support pieces, joined together and mounted on a Big leaf Maple burl.
A true work of art and passion, it is on display at the Ranger Station in McKenzie Bridge. Tickets for the raffle are available by contacting Brenda Hamlow at the ranger station. The drawing will be held on June 16th.
The scholarship fund will also benefit from a bloodmobile visit planned for July, also at the district office. In addition to donations of blood for the Lane Blood Bank, pledges, based on the number of blood donations, will be solicited. Should the blood drive yield 30 pints, a $1 per pint pledge would result in $30 in scholarship fund donations. The bloodmobile visit is planned for Tuesday, July 7th, from 8 a.m. to noon. Pledges can be made with Brenda at the ranger station (541) 822-7222 and appointments to donate blood can be scheduled by contacting the Lane Blood Bank at (541) 484-9111.
