Hiddleston-Led Eagles Trump Triangle Lake

McKenzie’s Buggy Hiddleston continued her “Sherman-like” march through opposing Mt. West League defenses as the Eagle senior notched her seventh double-double of the season (third consecutive), leading her team to a 38-26 thumping of visiting Triangle Lake, last Friday, January 20. Hiddleston scored 15 points and hauled in 10 rebounds versus the Lakers. The victory kept the Eagles perfect in Mt. West League play at 4-0 with only four League games to be played.

As of Friday, Siletz Valley and Lowell were tied for second at 2-2 and Triangle Lake and Alsea were tied for fourth at 1-3. McKenzie’s win over Triangle Lake clearly gives Eagle Head Coach David Duncan’s team the inside road to the 2015 Mt. West League Title and number one seed going into the League Tournament.

McKenzie established control over the rival Lakers early as they led 11-1 at the end of the first quarter and 19-12 at halftime. The Eagle defense held the Laker’s to 4 points in the third quarter and McKenzie had a 29-16 lead at the end of three quarters of play. Hiddleston also led her team with 7 steals and added 4 assists. Miyanna Hayes had one of her best games of the season as she scored 6 points, hauled in 7 rebounds, stole the ball 4 times and had an assist. Eagle point guard Jorden Smith also scored 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Kailyn Ringler ended the evening with 5 points, 3 boards, 1 assist and a blocked shot. Katey Totten added 2 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, Aly Heins scored 2 points and added an assist, Paige Lowry had 2 points and a rebound, and Idgie Glynn stole the ball once. The Eagles shot 31% from the field.

Lakers Lambaste Eagles 62-39

Triangle Lake’s victory over McKenzie at Finn Rock, last Friday evening kept the Lakers hot on the trail for the Mt. West League Title. Siletz Valley Charter (8-0) remains undefeated in League play and the Lakers are currently at 7-2. Lowell sits solidly in third place at 6-2. Alsea sits even up at 4-4 and none of the rest of the League teams have a winning record.

The loss to the Lakers coupled with a trip the following Friday to Mapleton, who defeated Head Coach Galen Scrivner’s team (3-5) 53-39 in an earlier meeting (December 16). Versus Triangle Lake, McKenzie senior center Alex Nastasiuk led his team in scoring with 12 points.

Laker senior Cole Younger led all scorers in the contest with 24 points and was supported by sophomore teammate Janson Richardson who added 12 points. Laker senior Hayden Wilkinson nearly earned a double-double as he scored 9 points and secured 10 rebounds.

Sailors Sink Eagle’s 55-40

The Mapleton Varsity Boys Basketball team defeated the visiting McKenzie Eagles last Friday, January 23. No game statistics were reported by either team.

Damascus Dominates, Drubs McKenzie 54-16

The McKenzie Eagles Girls Basketball team knew the trip would be tough. Damascus Christian was the 3rd ranked team in the latest OSAA State 1A rankings and one of just three teams from all classifications still unbeaten this season thus far.

Damascus Christian left no doubt in the gym as to how well they play the game of basketball, defeating the visitors from Finn Rock in a rout. The thirty-eight point margin equaled the worst Eagle defeat suffered earlier this season when North Douglas won 60-22 on December 19.

The good news is the game was non-League and McKenzie has the opportunity to learn from their trip north and apply their education to the Mt. West League battles yet to come. Going into this week, the Eagle girls still lead the Mt. West League with an unblemished 4-0 record. Siletz Valley sits in second place at 2-2, Triangle Lake and Lowell follow at 2-3, and Alsea is in last place at 1-3. Damascus Christian, currently ranked second in the OSAA polls, clamped down on the visiting Eagles from the start as they held McKenzie scoreless in the first quarter. Damascus Christian, also Eagles, scored 12 points in the first period and the home team never looked back.

McKenzie did not mount an offensive threat the entire game. The Finn Rock Eagles trailed 33-7 at the halftime break and scored just 2 points in the third quarter to fall behind 47-9 at the end of three quarters of play. The Damascus Christian defense and the lack of effective offense saw McKenzie shoot an anemic 16% from the field, a season low. To make matters worse, the offense couldn’t get untracked due to the 32 turnovers McKenzie committed in the contest. High scorer for the Eagles was once again, senior captain Buggy Hiddleston, who scored 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Katey Totten had 3 points and 6 rebounds and Jorden Smith added 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. Idgie Glynn shot a three point shot for 3 points and hauled down 2 rebounds, Miyanna Hayes scored 3 points and added a rebound, Aly Heins and Kailyn Ringler each grabbed 3 boards. McKenzie is currently ranked 14th in the latest OSAA State rankings.

Eagle Alum Jordan Wiley Earns WOU Player of the Week

McKenzie Alumni Jordan Wiley (2012) recently earned Western Oregon University’s Male Player of the Week Award for the week of January 19. Wiley, a junior starter on the Wolves Varsity Men’s Basketball team, had a couple of standout games when he scored 21 points against St. Martins on January 17 and then exploded for a career best 26 points versus Simon Fraser on January 22.

Wiley’s Wolves defeated Simon Fraser 114-74 with the junior sharp shooter drilling 7 of 8 at the three point line, 8 of 10 field goals overall, and 3 for 5 at the free-throw stripe to lead all scorers with 26 points. Wiley is currently averaging 11.5 points per game, second most on the team. The Eagle Alum also leads his team in 3 point shots with 49 made out of 103 attempts.

Approximately midway through the season, Western Oregon University’s Men’s Basketball team currently sits atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a record of 8-1 (16-3 overall) and has a current win streak of six games.
