Weather keeps ODOT crews busy

12/4/12 ODOT crews in Lane County today were busy responding to weather related issues affecting state highways

On US 101, approximately 12 miles north of Florence, crews were called out at 3:16 a.m. to remove a large tree that had fallen across the highway and into utility lines.  One lane was reopened at 7:39 a.m. and the highway was fully reopened at 11:18 a.m.

Boulder on Hwy 126W

On OR 126W (Florence-Eugene Hwy) a large boulder and rock debris fell onto the highway at approximately 8:30 a.m.  Traffic was restricted until the rock fall was cleared at approximately 10:30.
With additional wind and rain in the forecast, motorists traveling in rural, coastal or mountainous terrain should be prepared for winter driving conditions that may involve a detour or alternate route.

Motorists are encouraged to travel with adequate fuel in their vehicle; additional blankets or clothing; flashlights and cell phones with charged batteries; extra food and water; traction devices and/or tires.
All motorists should be prepared to travel on wet roads.  Motorists need extra stopping distance on wet roads. Watch for disabled vehicles, debris and other hazards commonly associated with wet weather driving and:
* Maintain additional space between your vehicle and the one ahead;
* Watch for hydroplaning, which remains a risk and can occur without
warning. Reducing speed is the best prevention against hydroplaning;
* Avoid distractions by minimizing other activities while driving.
