Experienced Wolves Wallop Eagles

The Days Creek Wolves handed the host McKenzie Eagles a 60-20 thumping last Friday night in the non-league 2013 season opener for both 8-man football teams. The Wolves senior led team dominated the relatively inexperienced Eagles, who finished the game with 8 players on the field due to injury and ineligibility issues. It was McKenzie’s turn in the barrel so to speak as the Eagles had defeated Days Creek by decisive margins, 50-22 in 2012 and 60-6 in 2011. Senior quarterback Bailey Adams led the Eagle offense with 135 yards passing, completing two touchdown receptions to tight-end Alex Nastasiuk and running for another score. Adams had one interception on the night. Nastasiuk hauled in 5 passes in the game for a total of 84 yards. The Eagles Jeffrey Bayer was injured in the opening minutes of the game and will be lost for approximately 6 weeks, according to Head Coach Neil Barrett.

Correction to last week’s article: The Eagles Football season opened up on Aug. 30. It was incorrectly stated as Sept. 30 last week.

McKenzie Volleyball Jamboree Successful, On To League Play

McKenzie Head Volleyball Coach Dan Brenner was quite pleased with the play of his Varsity players in the annual McKenzie Jamboree last Thursday. Coach Brenner played all 16 players suited, and although he utilized the same starting lineup throughout the day, Brenner moved players around into different positions throughout the matches, thus gaining valuable experience going into Mt. West League play this week on Tuesday versus Lowell (Home) and at Eddyville on Thursday. Both Varsity matches tip-off at 6:00 pm., with a Junior Varsity match slated for 4:30 pm. at Eddyville. “We have a team that is going to be very athletic, perhaps as athletic or more so than some of our recent past teams. These players have a willingness to play, willing to make the impossible play. It is a pleasure to watch them work hard, even in practice,” Brenner added. The Eagles new offense, (Brenner calls it his Hybrid Offense) is somewhat complicated and features a lot of movement, with players moving and rotating profusely. Brenner states,” All the athletes will need to understand their potential” and be able to fill in wherever they are needed. Indeed, the team will need to be ready to rumble as their schedule is front loaded with the League powerhouses right off the bat, ie. Lowell, Crow and Triangle Lake.
