A public meeting of the Budget Committee of the McKenzie Fire & Rescue District, Lane County, State of Oregon, to discuss the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013, will be held at Walterville Fire Station, 38925 McKenzie Highway, Walterville. The meeting will take place on April 17, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to receive the budget message and to receive comment from the public on the budget.

Steven L. Austin, 53, of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Walterville, Oregon, passed away on July 5th at the University of Washington Medical Center’s Cancer Clinic surrounded by friends and family. Memorial services will be scheduled in early August.

'Girls in the Woods' Looking for Enthusiastic Campers

The Willamette National Forest, in partnership with Girls Scouts of America, is hosting a ‘Girls in the Woods’ outdoor extravaganza from July 30th to August 3rd on the McKenzie River Ranger District. Girls entering the 5th through 8th grades are invited to join the fun.

“The Girls in the Woods program encourages girls to get outdoors and enjoy our natural places,” said Ruby Seitz, Forest Service Wildlife Biologist.

Oregon lost the world’s biggest log cabin in spectacular 1964 fire

When the sun came up on the morning of August 17, 1964, Oregon was home of the world’s largest log cabin.

MANZANITA, OR: Jeanette Louise Mastrantonio died on May 8th in Manzanita. She was 73 years old.

She was born on September 1st, 1938 in Eugene. She graduated from the McKenzie River High School and the University of Oregon. She was the first Public Information Officer for the Willamette National Forest in Eugene and was transferred to the Pacific Southwest Research Station in Berkeley, California as an information specialist.
