The McKenzie River Valley is world-renowned for its cold, clear water, uniquely emerging from volcanic lava beds, which provide natural filtering and a relatively constant flow and temperature. Past US Presidents and other notable dignitaries have vacationed and fished on the McKenzie for its prized Rainbow Trout, guided by iconic local guide families rowing the no less iconic McKenzie River Boat. This is also Big Timber country and the drive up the McKenzie Highway has always held as one of the most beautiful trips through both remnant...
ODFW has implemented emergency fishing regulations throughout the state to help protect fish during hot, dry weather. Fishing tips for beating the heat Get up early. Fish early in the morning when water temperatures are cooler and fish are more active. You might also beat the swimmers, kayakers, paddle boarders, sailors, water skiers and others that might get in your way. Go higher. Lakes at higher elevations should be cooler than those on the valley floors. This is a great time of year to fish some of the hike-in lakes. Fish the headwaters....
Open fire restrictions are now in effect on the Willamette National Forest as of Friday, July 2, at 12:01 a.m. This spring was significantly drier than normal with long-term drought persisting across much of the western Cascades. The recent heatwave has accelerated the drying of fuels across the forest. The critically dry conditions are receptive to new ignitions and are conducive to rapid fire spread. The predicted weather forecast calls for continued warm and dry conditions with no precipitation expected in the foreseeable future. This...

A group of private timberland owners decided on Monday to close public access to their lands. Seneca, Lone Rock Resources, Giustina Resources, Campbell Global, and Giustina Land & Timber Company combined own around 600,000 acres, in Western Oregon. With drought conditions and above-average temperatures, Oregon is already experiencing a bad fire season. The number of fires so far this year is already 1.5 times higher than the 10-year average, and the acreage affected has been more than four times greater than the ten year average. The landowners...

“Looking good!” People have been telling me while delivering Reflections to stores and restaurants for the last two weeks. That’s because they liked seeing color photos rather than the print edition’s normal black & white front-page images. This week I’m expecting to hear comments along the lines of: “Must be a lot of news!” when they find the July 1st issue weighs twice as much. Printing in color and adding more pages are the result of one input - advertising. In both cases, it’s pretty expensive. The second though, has some interesting wri...
Last year was the worst wildfire season for western Oregon and the Willamette and Mt. Hood National Forests in decades. As for the Forest Supervisors of these National Forests, we saw firsthand how the fires affected the lives of our communities, employees, and loved ones; it has been both heartbreaking and uplifting. We witnessed some amazing moments: community members and Forest Service employees coming together to support each other; donations literally coming in by the truckload; local, state, and federal agencies and community organization...
r Day night 2020; nine months since the Holiday Farm Wildfire devastated more than 170,000 acres and destroyed more than a thousand structures and five-hundred homes in the McKenzie Watershed. Three seasons (Fall, Winter, and Spring) since thousands of McKenzie folk had to run for their lives. I was one of those people. I left our home at midnight taking with me with our dog, a ‘bug-out’ bag, the shirt on my back, and little else. As I was preparing to leave, I walked through our home one last time to say goodbye. It was clear what was in sto...

Under the light of a single bulb, in a big storage room at the University of Oregon's Museum of Natural and Cultural History in Eugene, are the bones of a famous onetime Oregonian named Ned. Ned had other names. On stage, he was billed as "Tusko the Magnificent," "Tusko the Terrible," or just plain "Tusko." Toward the end of his short life, he was known in the newspapers as "Tusko the Unwanted." But he always answered to Ned, and toward the end he started getting angry when people called him...
People and plants need care to make it through heatwaves without wilting. Erica Chernoh, Oregon State University Extension Service horticulturist, offers some ideas to help keep yourself and your garden as comfortable as possible. Keep hydrated. Carry a water bottle – and use it! You need water as much as your plants do. If you plan to work in the garden, do it in the morning before the hottest part of the day. Wear a hat and lather on the sunscreen when outside. Water in the morning to give pla...
I've never tried this before, but what the hell. A few years ago my husband of 10 years left me out of the blue. It was awful for my sons and me, though it was not a happy marriage. He was verbally and mentally abusive, and I went into an angry shell. I changed from the happy person I once was into this monster. When he left I realized it was the best thing he could have done for me. It was hard to meet people, so I tried online dating. I met two great guys. I let dating go on way too long...
