During the “last two anniversaries, we have spent time focusing on the trauma, sorrow, grief, fe...

    Ken Engelman|Sep 14, 2023

Growing up it was a festive month with plenty of cake to go around because we celebrated my Mom’s birthday, and five days later, mine. That was many years ago and now far away as I moved around the country before settling in Oregon. Three years ago COVID and the Holiday Farm Fire impacted all of us. It was devastating to Louise, my wife, who was already being battered by the negative impacts of Alzheimer’s. Her passing made me less likely to look forward to future arrivals of the ninth month of the year. That foreboding proved to be acc...

They were there for one last evening of fun while they were still in port. That very evening, they were scheduled to climb back into their submarines and set out on an extended cruise. The private party had been arranged by one of the subs’ commanders, who had struck up a fri...

  • No-till gardening keeps soil – and plants – healthy

    Kym Pokorny, OSU Extension|Sep 14, 2023

While the practice of no-till gardening is not new, information has traditionally centered on agricultural field crops. Now, home gardeners are catching on. “The concept of no-till has been around for a couple of decades, but research has been very focused on field crops like wheat and corn, things largely grown in the Midwest,” said Erica Chernoh, Oregon State University Extension Service horticulturist. “There’s not much on vegetable production or fruit. There’s a lot to learn, and research...

I don’t know whether to call it jealousy or insecurity. My husband and I have been married almost 30 years. Last year at my husband’s surprise birthday party, one of my friends asked who a certain woman in the room was. When I asked why, she said, “She and your husband have been making eye contact all night, and he seems to be paying her a lot of attention.” From there on, I started watching the behavior between them. My husband participates in a sport with this woman’s husband, and at times...
