They're part of a larger network of volunteer groups in the county, state, and nationwide that provide search and rescue services. They're also called to assist mountain rescue organizations from other counties in Oregon, or in other states if they need additio...

  • BLM reverses logging plan

    Nov 17, 2022

Environmentalists chalked up a win last month in the efforts to stop a Trump-era rule that allowed more logging on post-fire land without conducting detailed environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act. In rules adopted in 2020, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) increased the maximum area for “categorical exclusions” from 250 to 3,000 acres. The change allowed the agency to move ahead on logging projects they said would involve minimal environmental impacts. Cascadia Wil...

The project was shepherded by Weston Miller, an OSU Extension community horticulturist who got the ball rolling six years ago when collaborators ex-pressed interest and provided funds for what would become the Solve Pest and Weed Problems website. "Our stakeholders – Metro, the East, and West M...

  • Oregon had friends in high places ... in Imperial Japan

    Finn J.D. John|Nov 17, 2022

Yosuke Matsuoka left his Oregon home for the last time in 1902 when he was 22 years old; he'd lived in Oregon and, briefly, California, since age 13. His Oregon years had been happy ones, and he would remember them fondly for the rest of his life. Oregon would remember him fondly, too (until Pearl Harbor Day, of course). Within 25 years of his graduation, he would be probably the most famous University of Oregon alumnus in the world; within 50, it's most notorious. That, of course, was all far i...

    Kym Pokorny, OSU Extension|Nov 17, 2022

The amount of invasive brown marmorated stink bugs in 2022 tops anything that was seen in Oregon for at least five years and poses a serious threat to Oregon crops and garden plants, according to Oregon State University Extension Service's orchard crop specialist. "It's unusual for brown marmolated stink bugs to feed on fruit and vegetable...

My husband has a mild case of Tourette Syndrome, which causes involuntary movements and unwelcome outcries. We've been married six years, and I'm not sure I can take it anymore. His symptoms include anger, immaturity, and not linking action with consequence. He lashes out at me, then blames me for making him do it. Our daily life revolves around him acting worse than a child. The only peace is when I hide everything I feel and need. When his Tourette's isn't acting up, he is a different person....

Leslie Azor's new Natuzzi sofa set is coming apart. The company keeps sending a repairman to her home, but so far, he hasn't been able to fix the furniture. Can she get a refund? I bought a Natuzzi recliner sofa set last year from a local retailer. After using the furniture lightly for a few months, it was clear there was something wrong with it. One recliner was completely defective and you feel the metal bar in the footrest. The leather has wrinkled and pushed up the metal pieces because the...

Edward Marks buys a "cancel for any reason" protection plan for his cruise. But when he has to cancel, he finds that it's worthless. What went wrong? I had to cancel my American Cruise Lines cruise from Memphis to New Orleans for medical reasons. I called American Cruise Lines and inquired about rebooking for a cruise this fall using my cancellation credits. I had paid $570 for a "cancel for any reason" protection plan. A representative informed me that I only had $350 in credit instead of 80...
