Carver kids BLUE RIVER: Events like the Chainsaw Art Festival involve competitions like the daily quick carves or main event sculptures. Yet behind the scenes the interactions between the people operating those snarling saws are pretty open hearted. That’s what Randy Gauthier of Moberly Lake, British Columbia, found out last year when a string of bad luck left all his gear in the wrong country. After other hassles with ticket agents and border officials he arrived at the show with little pocket money and no tools. Not for long, however. Other c...

EWEB logo Wildish Construction will close the Leaburg Dam to all vehicle and pedestrian access starting on Monday, August 25th. The work is expected to take about three days, but could last until Thursday and Friday if unforeseen issues come up. People who regularly walk or drive across the dam should be prepared for a full week of closures – on weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. If Wildish finishes removal of the bulkhead earlier, the Eugene Water & Electric Board will notify nearby residents. EWEB had expected some...
Yesterday, lightning sparked six fires on the McKenzie River Ranger District. Fortunately, firefighters were able to respond rapidly to these starts and kept them all under an acre. All the fires were located in the north end of the Three Sisters Wilderness and required the work of rappellers, smoke jumpers and district personnel to keep the fire sizes to a minimum. “We are also keeping a look out for ‘sleepers,’” said Randy Harbick, Fire Management Officer for the McKenzie River Ranger District. “Yesterday, we found two fires that were left...

OSP logo Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and Bend Police Department, are investigating the death of an adult male following a standoff during a stop along Highway 20. The man was stopped following a report from an outside agency that he was suicidal and armed. On August 16, 2014 at approximately 8:40 p.m., OSP and Deschutes County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) were notified that a black sport utility vehicle occupied by an armed, suicidal man was traveling eastbound on Highway 20 in the Santiam Pass...
Crane on Leaburg Dam LEABURG: The Eugene Water & Electric Board’s directors last week approved additional funds for repairs to the Leaburg Dam. The action will allow work to move forward at a cost that could exceed 25% of the original contract price of $399,000 awarded to the Wildish Construction Company. In a memo to EWEB’s directors, the utility’s engineering manager, Mel Damewood, reported that to replace the failed hydraulic motor for Roll Gate 2, EWEB had authorized installing a bulkhead upstream of the dam. The structure was desig...

Fire locations All day long the calls kept coming into the fire office; new smoke reports and fire size ups from people in the field. As of 6pm there are approximately 40 new fires on the Middle Fork and 6 on the McKenzie River Ranger District. The majority of the fires on both districts are small; with just a few of them between 1 and 5 acres. The largest new fire is on the eastern slopes of Mt Hagan near Blue River. That fire is between 6 and 10 acres; retardant drops occurred throughout the afternoon and water-carrying helicopters are en...
Subdivision DEERHORN: A proposal to create a 27-home subdivision is currently under review by the Lane County Planning Division. Under the plan, the existing nine-hole McKenzie River Golf Course would be converted into two-acre residential parcels. Earlier this year area residents had an opportunity to comment on the proposed conversion of the 58-acre property. Some two dozen opinions were submitted. Most, according to Larry Reed, who represents the property owner, dealt with issues like changes to the character of the community or loss of...

Public Health logo A health advisory is being issued today due to high levels of blue-green algae in Walterville Pond, located off Hwy. 126. Walterville Pond is adjacent to the Eugene Water and Electric Board's (EWEB) Walterville Canal, a half mile northeast of the town of Walterville. Water monitoring has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae that can produce toxins. These algae levels are likely associated with dangerous cyanotoxin concentrations in the water that can be harmful to humans and animals. Swallowing or inhaling water droplet...

Loading logs In 2013, Oregon’s timber harvest rose to 4.2 billion board feet, marking four consecutive years of increase from the recession low of 2.72 billion board feet in 2009. “This was the first harvest above four billion board feet in seven years,” said ODF principal economist Brandon Kaetzel, “and represents a 12 percent increase over the 2012 harvest of 3.75 billion board feet.” Approximately 49 percent, or 30.2 million acres, of Oregon is forested.
