Girls in the Woods

'Girls in the Woods' Looking for Enthusiastic Campers

The Willamette National Forest, in partnership with Girls Scouts of America, is hosting a ‘Girls in the Woods’ outdoor extravaganza from July 30th to August 3rd on the McKenzie River Ranger District. Girls entering the 5th through 8th grades are invited to join the fun.

“The Girls in the Woods program encourages girls to get outdoors and enjoy our natural places,” said Ruby Seitz, Forest Service Wildlife Biologist.

“I really enjoy this project with the Girl Scouts, because we get to share our passion for nature based career options,” added Seitz.

The five-night camping adventure has two options — offering a variety of activities including wildlife surveys, aquatic scavenger hunts, GPS and Wilderness geocaching, nature based crafts, camping and hiking. Some of the girls will stay at the lake and do all their activities from there. The other group will backpack into the wilderness and camp. There are still openings for both options although the wilderness adventure is filling fast.
