Eagles Corral Cowboys
McKenzie’s Varsity 8-man football team returned to the Victory Trail last Friday, Sept. 14, and defeated the visiting North Lake Cowboys out of Silver Lake by a score of 42 to 22. The non-conference win puts the Eagles at 2-1 for the 2012 season and dropped the Cowboys to 0-2. McKenzie, the defending 2011 Mt. West League Champions, will host the Siletz Valley Charter Warriors next Friday at 7:00 pm. in their first League game of the season. Siletz also boasts a 2-1 record on the year having defeated Falls City 80-20 and 3A Chemawa 28-21 while losing to #2 ranked Perrydale 56-12.
Eagle Quarterback Victor Vidal led his team’s drive to victory by completing 16 of 30 pass attempts for a total of 295 aerial yards, 4 TDs and 1 interception. Vidal also ran for another 3 touchdowns on 12 carries for a total of 60 yds. All in all a very good night for the Eagle senior. Caleb Scrivner caught 5 of Vidal’s passes for 159 yards on the evening, the longest a 67 yard reception. Two of Scrivner’s pass receptions were converted into touchdowns on receptions of 66 and 55 yds. respectively. Josh Ness grabbed 6 Vidal passes for 83 yards, one going for 66 yards. Blake Anderson hauled in 3 passes for 42 yards, and Bailey Adams caught 1 for 11 yards. Ness rushed 10 times for 36 yards while Anderson also carried the ball 5 times for 30 yards. Adams gained 12 yards on 2 carries. Defensively, the Eagles were just as sharp as Ness led his team with 6 tackles, 10 assists for a total of 16 tackles. Alex Nastasiuk and Casey Mitchell each contributed 5 tackles and 9 assists for 14 total tackles apiece and Blake Anderson added 7 tackles and 5 assists for 12 total tackles. Mitchell and Anderson each sacked the North Lake Quarterback once. Ness intercepted the Cowboys once and returned it 45 yards. Siletz Valley will definitely present the Eagles with a stronger team this week. Last year McKenzie defeated the Warriors in Siletz, 44-20.

McKenzie Trips Mohawk Thursday
McKenzie’s Varsity Volleyball squad opened its Mt. West League Championship defense by hosting the Mohawk Indians last Thurs., Sept. 13. The Eagles won easily in 3 sets, 25-8, 25-15, and 25-11. Senior Samantha Winningham, selected by her coach as Player of the Game, led her team with 7 kills and aces. Teammate Peace Shepherd contributed 6 kills in the match with Ayshia Seiler adding 12 assists.

Eagles Split at Yoncalla Tourney, Win 2, Lose 2
The Eagle Volleyball Team traveled south to Douglas County and participated in the annual Yoncalla Volleyball Tournament last Sat., Sept. 15. In the first match of the day, the Eagles faced up with Camas Valley, and defeated the Hornets in the first set 25-12, lost the second set 20-25 and won the third set 15-5. In the match Makaila Hiddleston led her team with 7 kills and 10 digs. Samantha Winningham also had 7 kills and 4 aces. Sydney King added 5 kills, 11 digs and 9 assists while Peace Shepherd had 4 kills and 13 digs. Ayshia Seiler served up 2 aces along with 9 assists in the match. McKenzie next lined up opposite of Tournament Host Yoncalla. McKenzie won the first set 25-17, lost the second set 13-25 and lost the third set 9-15. Yoncalla is currently ranked 11th in the State 1A rankings. For the match, Makaila Hiddleston had 9 kills, 8 digs, and 1 ace. Shyla Harlan added 7 kills as did Ayshia Seiler, who also had 11 assists. Katey Totten contributed 7 kills and 1 ace and Sydney King added another 6 digs. In the 3rd Match of the Tournament, the Eagles again faced Camas Valley, and defeated the Hornets in two sets, 25-21 and 25-10. Samantha Winningham led her team with 5 kills, 4 aces, and 11 digs. Makaila Hiddleston had 9 kills and 5 digs. Peace Shepherd added 7 kills and 8 digs and Sydney King contributed 9 digs. Katey Totten served 2 aces to go with 18 assists and Shyla Harlan also had 2 aces and 8 digs in the match. The final match of the day pitted the Yoncalla Eagles against the McKenzie Eagles once again, and Yoncalla defeated McKenzie in 2 out of 3 sets. McKenzie won the 1st set 25-21, lost the second 13-25, and lost the third 10-15. For the match, Makaila Hiddleston garnered 12 kills, 2 blocks, and 9 digs. Corinna Price had 4 kills and 9 digs, while Sydney King had 12 digs. Peace Shepherd added 8 digs and Shyla Harlan also added 6 digs. Katey Totten had 12 assists and 1 block in the match. The Eagles return to Mt. West League Match play on Tuesday, Sept. 18, traveling to meet the Lowell Red Devils. McKenzie hosts Alsea in League play on Thursday, Sept. 20. Both matches tip off at 6 pm. The Eagles will host their own 8 team Tournament on Sat., Sept. 22. The Teams entered in the McKenzie Tournament are 3A Glide (17th ranked in 3A Class, earned round 1 at 2011 State), 2A Reedsport (2nd ranked, 3rd place finish at 2011 State), 2A Culver (5th ranked, 4th place at 2011 State), 1A St. Paul (ranked 4th, 4th place at 2011 State), 1A Mapleton (14th ranked), 1A Prospect (21 ranked, 2nd round at 2011 State), 1A Umpqua Valley Christian (1st round at 2011 State), and McKenzie, currently ranked at 24th and coming off a 2nd Round at OSAA 2011 State Championships. This should prove to be a very fine preseason tournament, so be sure to set your calendar and come support the Eagles.
