Red Devils Burn Eagles

The Lowell Red Devils upended Mt. West League leader McKenzie 54-51 last Tue., Jan. 29 at Lowell. The Eagles entered the game undefeated in League play and were a clear favorite to win the second game of the season against Lowell. McKenzie defeated the Red Devils by 19 pts. (59-40) in the first game and might have been looking too far ahead on the schedule with Crow and Triangle Lake both on the horizon. Both rivals are now back in the hunt for the League title with Triangle Lake tied at the top with McKenzie at 10-1 and Crow is 2 games back at 8-3. The Eagles wrap up their regular season schedule with Crow and then Triangle Lake as the last two games respectively. Against the Red Devils, Eagle senior Victor Vidal lead all scorers in the game with 18 pts. Teammates Caleb Scrivner and Bailey Adams each added 12 pts.

McKenzie Girls Beat Lowell, 48-38

McKenzie’s Varsity Girls Basketball Team defeated the Lowell Red Devils at Lowell last Tues., Jan. 29. The win was timely in that the Eagles remained a half game back of the Mt. West League leading Triangle Lake Lakers, with a showdown scheduled for Finn Rock on Feb. 7. McKenzie beat Lowell by a ten point margin, but the Eagles could not shake the Red Devils until the 4th period when they outscored the hosts 12-5. The Eagles held a slim 9-8 lead at the end of the first period and each team scored 13 in the second period for a tight 22-21 half time score. McKenzie was able to extend their slim lead to 3 pts. by the end of the 3rd period (36-33). Makaila Hiddleston lead all scorers in the contest with 14 pts. and tallied another double-double as she also hauled down 10 rebounds. Eagle post player Katey Totten had an outstanding game of her own as she scored 7 pts., grabbed 13 rebounds and added 5 steals. Corinna Price scored 7 pts., and Shyla Harlan added another 4 steals. Senior Samantha Winningham also had an excellent night on the court as she scored 6 pts., had 8 rebounds, and stole the ball 5 times. As a team the Eagles pilfered a total of 21 steals from Lowell’s offense and at the other end of the court had a team total of 12 assists.

McKenzie Traps Wolverines, Looks For Cougar Tracks

The McKenzie Eagles were the hosts for the Alsea Wolverines last Friday eve.

Feb. 1 and defeated the visitors from Benton County 59-36. With the win, the Eagles at 11-1, remain in a tie for first place in the Mt. West League with Triangle Lake, winners Fri. over Siletz Valley, 60-49. McKenzie will host the Crow Cougars, currently in 3rd place in the League standings, on Tuesday, Feb. 5. McKenzie Senior Blake Anderson lead all scorers in the game with 16 pts. and added 9 steals to his game line. Junior Bailey Adams rang up a double-double in the game as he scored 12 pts. to go with 10 rebounds.

Eagle Girls Wallop Wolverines

Senior Samantha Winningham lead her team to victory over the visiting Alsea Wolverines last Fri., Feb. 1 as she scored 13 pts. McKenzie won the game easily 50-23 and stayed within a half game of the Mt. West League leaders, Triangle Lake. The Eagles set the pace early in the game by outscoring the Wolverines 14-3 in the opening quarter and commanding a 25-5 lead at the half time break. The score at the end of the 3rd period had McKenzie up 38-17. Makaila Hiddleston added 11 pts. in the winning cause. Eagle teammates Corinna Price, Buggy Hiddleston, and Jorden Smith all added 6 pts. McKenzie’s Katey Totten and Shyla Harlan each secured 7 rebounds while Harlan also lead her team with 5 steals.

McKenzie Girls Clobber Columbia Christian

McKenzie completed the last non-League road trip of the 2013 regular season as they traveled to Portland to battle the Columbia Christian Knights of the Valley 10 League. The Eagle girls were the first game scheduled out of the bus and didn’t get their sea-legs until the 2nd quarter as they ended the first quarter tied 4-4, but outscored the Knights 15-6 in the second to go into the locker-room at halftime leading 19-10. The Eagles established themselves in firm control however following the break as they scored 20 pts. in the 3rd and held Columbia Christian to 12 to take a 39-22 lead. The Knights had no answer for the Eagles Makaila Hiddleston as she lead her team with 14 pts. while adding 6 rebounds and 4 steals to her game line. Ayshia Seiler scored 5 pts. for McKenzie. Samantha Winningham hauled in 7 rebounds, Katey Totten grabbed another 5 rebounds, while Shyla Harlan added 5 more rebounds and 4 steals. Corinna Price also had 4 steals in the game for the Eagles. McKenzie’s Mt. West League record is 11-1 and 16-5 overall following this game and they are ranked at 11th in the latest OSAA polls. Triangle Lake (11-0, 18-3) enters the last regular season week with a slim half game lead over the Eagles for first place. McKenzie hosts Crow on Monday, Feb. 4 and hosts Triangle Lake on Thursday, Feb. 7. Both contests tip-off at 5:30 pm.

Knights Knock- off Eagles, 49-35

McKenzie’s Varsity Girls dominated visiting Crow on Monday night, defeating the Cougars convincingly 44-17. The Eagles now host the Mt. West League leading Triangle Lake Lakers in a pivotal game this Thursday, Feb. 7. The Mt. West League title and subsequent seeding in the League Tournament is at stake on a night where McKenzie will honor its Senior players. The 6th ranked Lakers defeated the 11th ranked Eagles earlier in the season, 63-35, and are lead by high scoring Kiana Brown and teammate Abi Wynn. Makaila Hiddleston was the game’s leading scorer Monday as she scored 16 pts. and hauled in 6 rebounds. Samantha Winningham earned a double-double on the evening as she scored 10 pts. and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Cougars Even Score, Defeat Eagles 56-48

The Crow Cougars arrived at Finn Rock, home of the Eagles, 2 games out of first place, with McKenzie and Triangle Lake both tied at the top of the Mt. West League standings. When the visitors packed their bags for the trip home they had knocked the Eagles off their perch and positioned themselves, potentially, for a second place tie, pending the outcome of the McKenzie/Triangle Lake showdown on Thursday, Feb. 7. Triangle Lake maintained sole possession of first place in the League as they defeated Alsea 91-47 on Monday evening. The Eagles are currently in second place, one game behind the Lakers and one game ahead of the Cougars. Against Crow, McKenzie’s Bailey Adams led all scorers as he tallied 23 pts. The Eagles held a slim 25-24 pt. lead at the halftime break, holding Crow’s leading scorer, Brayden Anderson, to just two pts. That all changed however in the second half as Anderson shook his slump, scored 15 pts in the rest of the game as the Cougars established a 37-34 lead at the end of three periods. Anderson wound up with 17 pts. (6-6 at the free-throw line), 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal.
