Warriors Wallop Eagles, 14-4
Oakridge needed only five innings, last Thursday, April 16, to send visiting McKenzie packing as they slammed the Eagles with their worst loss of the 2013 Baseball season 14-4, the game called due to the 10 run mercy rule. Senior Eagle starting pitcher Victor Vidal took the loss as he gave up 9 runs, 6 earned, on 11 hits. Vidal struck out 3 Oakridge batters and walked 2 others. Fellow senior Blake Anderson was just as unfortunate in relief on the hill as he allowed 5 additional runs scored on 3 hits in the fifth inning. Neither pitcher had their usual backup as the McKenzie defense wasn’t sharp either; the Eagles collectively committed 7 errors on the afternoon. Offensively, McKenzie was led by Vidal, who hit a 2 run home run, his first of the season, in going 1-1 at the plate. Vidal also walked two times and scored 2 runs. Nick Ringler hit twice out of three plate appearances, earning 2 RBIs, both from a double. Even the Eagles base running was off kilter as Ringler was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple and Casey Mitchell was thrown out advancing to third on a batted ball to the pitcher. Mitchell hit 2-3 and Bailey Adams scored a run on a 1-3 day at the dish. No other Eagles hit in the game. With the loss, McKenzie slipped further into fourth place in the District 3 title race, 2 games behind Oakridge, Monroe, and Lowell, who are all locked in a three-way tie for 1st place with one week left in League play. The Eagles travel to Siletz Valley on Monday, May 6 and then return to Finn Rock to conclude their regular season schedule at home with a double header with Crow on Wednesday, May 8 and Monroe on Friday, May 10. The first Crow game starts at 3:30 pm. with the second game slated for a 5:30 pm. first pitch. The Siletz and Monroe games begin at 4:30 pm.
Siletz Valley Warriors Upend Eagles in 7th, 10-9
One thing is for sure, the McKenzie Eagles have had their fill of Warrior baseball teams recently. Four days following a loss to the Oakridge Warriors, McKenzie traveled to Siletz and lost to the Warriors there, 10-9. The win was the second of the season for Siletz (2-6) and the loss dropped the Eagles to 3-5 in District 3 League play with two regular season games remaining for both teams. McKenzie now finds itself in a position where it must win one of the two final games on its League schedule to insure a fourth place finish. Siletz, which finishes out with Lowell and Oakridge both at Siletz, lost to Lowell 3-4 and Oakridge 1-2, earlier in the season on the road. Two Siletz wins coupled with two Eagle losses would drop McKenzie into 5th place and could impact any Eagle post-season play. McKenzie led the entire game at Siletz and went into the bottom of the seventh inning with a 2 run lead but the Warriors rallied with a walk off single and 3 runs to complete the victory rally. The Eagles scored one run in the first inning and one more in the second inning before giving up one Warrior run in the bottom of the third inning. McKenzie responded with a 6 run outburst in the top of the fifth inning and led 8-3 going into the 6th frame. The Eagles scored one more run in the top of the sixth inning but gave up 4 Siletz runs in the bottom; the McKenzie lead narrowed to 9-7. Siletz kept the Eagles from crossing the plate in the top of seven, and with the momentum clearly on their side, the Warriors scored 3 runs to chalk up the League win. Offensively, McKenzie’s Victor Vidal had a banner day as he had 3 hits out of 4 plate appearances, hitting a double and a homerun, earning three RBIs and scoring 2 runs. Teammate Spencer Brown had his season best day at the plate as he went 2-4, had two RBIs and scored a run. Casey Mitchell was 1-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Josh Ness had one hit out of three at bats with a run scored, and Seth Burson and Blue Bloomer each had a hit on the afternoon. Blake Anderson, Bailey Adams, and Nick Ringler each scored a run for the Eagles. Siletz pitchers struck out 8 McKenzie batters and the Eagles left 7 runners stranded on base, despite McKenzie base runners successfully swiping five bases out five attempts. Defensively, the Eagles continued to struggle as they committed 6 errors. Eagle starting pitcher Anderson allowed 7 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits and 4 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. Relief pitcher Vidal entered the game in the seventh and took the loss on the blown save as he was credited with allowing the 3 runs on just 2 hits while walking one and striking out one more.
