Nastasiuk Nails 3rd At State Track Meet
McKenzie's sophomore Nick Nastasiuk raced to a 3rd place finish at the OSAA State 1A Track and Field Meet held at Hayward Field last Thursday and Friday, May 23,24. Nastasiuk's time in the Finals Race was 42.48, breaking the new McKenzie record for the event he established in the District Meet the week prior. Nastasiuk's finish earned the team 6 pts. toward the Team Title. The 2013 winner was Will Comerford from Crosshill Christian with a time of 41.22 and the runnerup was Weston Tilton of Camas Valley, whose time was 41.56. The Eagle's Boys 4x400 m. Relay team, consisting of Bailey Adams, Jon Mahody, Dorian Dilley, and Nastasiuk, placed 7th in the Finals with a time of 3:45.00. The winning team, New Hope Christian, won with a time of 3:31.05. Triangle Lake's team placed 5th in a time of 3:41.06. Senior Jon Mahody ran his last race in an Eagle uniform as he finished his 1500 m. race in 8th place with a time of 4:32.73. Trevor Lane representing Southwest Christian won the race in a 4:04.66 time. In the Girls State 1A Meet, McKenzie's Makaila Hiddleston earned 6th place in the Shot Put event with her best toss of 33-01.25. The 2013 Champion in the event was Megan White of Spray with a mark of 39-02.00.
The Eagle Boys finished the State Meet in 25th place overall with 9 pts. Southwest Christian won the Team Championship with a point total of 63.50 pts. Lowell finished in 3rd place with 48 pts., Mohawk placed 10th (27 pts.), Crow placed 12th (19.50 pts.), Triangle Lake finished 17th (11 pts.), and Alsea ended the meet in 29th place (8 pts.). The McKenzie Girls finished their meet in a tie for 34th place with Alsea (3 pts.). Cove and Condon/Wheeler tied for the 2013 Team Championship with 51 pts. apiece. Triangle Lake placed 7th with 34 pts., Crow and Lowell tied for 17th (14 pts.), and Siletz Valley finished the day at 37th (1 pt.).
The McKenzie High School Spring Sports Awards Ceremony is slated for Tuesday, June 4, beginning at 6 pm.
District 3 Baseball
District 3 Baseball Champion Monroe earned a home game in the first round of the OSAA State 2A/1A Baseball Championships against Kennedy of District 2, the second seed out of that League. Kennedy finished the regular season with a 13-3 League record and 22-8 overall, ranked 4th in the State rankings. The game originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 22, was rained out and rescheduled for Wednesday, May 23. Monroe lost the game 2-6 and ended their 2013 season with a League record of 8-2 and 15-11 overall. Kennedy lost their next game to Umpqua Valley Christian, 0-1. UVC will now play Country Christian in a Semi-Final game. The other District 3 representative, the second seed Oakridge traveled to Knappa and lost a hard fought 1st round game, 7-11. With the loss Oakridge ended their season with a 8-2 League record and 16-8 overall. Knappa lost its next game in the second round to Grant Union, 7-10, ending their season. Grant Union, the 2nd ranked team in the State will now face Stanfield/Echo in the other State Semi-Final game.
