Free Summer Playground Program

Program starts June 24

Happy kidsWillamalane Park and Recreation District's free Summer Playground Program begins Monday, June 24, at nine neighborhood parks and playgrounds throughout Springfield.

The safe and supervised drop-in program, which runs four days a week, is designed to provide recreational activities centered around literacy, science, physical activity and positive character development. Its emphasis is on action as kids play basketball, soccer, Frisbee and badminton, among other activities. Last summer more than 200 kids participated each week.

The program, in which children can come and go as they please, is open only to children who are entering first through fifth grades. No exceptions will be granted. The program operates Monday-Thursday, June 24-Aug. 15. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no program on July 4. Light snacks are provided at the playgrounds.

In an arrangement with FOOD for Lane County and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Program, the playground sites will also serve as free lunch sites for children ages 2-18. FOOD for Lane County will serve meals from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, independent from Willamalane’s playground activities and schedules. Call FOOD for Lane County at 541-343-2822 for specific information.

Register in advance at Willamalane Center, 250 S. 32nd St., through Friday, June 21, or at the program sites beginning Monday, June 24. A registration form must be filled out for each site a child will attend.

While the Summer Playground Program is a free program, donations are welcome in any amount, large or small. Donations go directly into providing fun and memorable experiences for each child. To donate, call Willamalane at 541-736-4544 or send a check to 250 S. 32nd St., Springfield OR 97478.
