McKenzie Varsity Sports Schedule This Week

The Eagle Girls and Boys Track and Field teams travel to Regis High School in Stayton, near Salem, on Friday, May 9 to compete in the Regis Twilight Meet. Field events start at 3:00 pm. and Track events begin at 4:00 pm.

Eagle Teams 14th at Sisters Rotary Invitational

The McKenzie Boys and Girls Track and Field teams both finished 14th in their respective meets last Friday, May 2 at the Sisters Rotary Invitational Meet. The Eagle Girls team scored 10 points in the 17 school meet featuring teams from the 1A-5A Classifications. Host Sisters, with 117 points, easily outpaced second place Cascade, who finished with 80 points. McKenzie’s Boys team earned 9 points as Elmira dominated the meet with 130 points followed by Sisters in second place with 82 points.

Hiddleston a Sure Shot Winner at Sisters

Senior Eagle Makaila Hiddleston heaved the shot put for a blue first place ribbon at the Sisters Rotary Twilight Invitational last Friday May 2. Hiddleston’s throw was marked at 31-01.50 feet. Teammates Breanna Van Pernis placed 17th with a throw of 23-11.75 feet and Isabella Espinoza threw for 21-01.00 feet and 30th place. Hiddleston also placed 10th in the javelin with a throw of 85-00 feet and Van Pernis finished the event in 36th place, marked at 49-03 feet. Kelsey Shaw, Elmira, won the javelin with a throw of 139-04 feet. McKenzie’s Idgie Glynn recorded 29-06.50 feet in the triple jump, finishing 9th. Eagle Tamera Satchell was 19th in the same event with a mark of 25-02.00 feet. Cascade’s Emily Rose won the triple jump with a leap of 32-04.00 feet. Glynn was timed 19.09 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles, good for a 10th place finish behind winner Kirstyn Greshong, Elmira, who raced in 16.67 seconds. Glynn also led her 4X400 meter relay team to an 11th place finish timed in 5:16.00 minutes. Shyla Harlan, Britanny Bayer, and Haley Jackson made up the rest of the relay team. Host Sisters won the event in 4:12.13 minutes. Jackson also placed 14th in the 400 meter race with a time of 1:13.50 minutes, as Makenna Conley, Redmond, won the race in 1:02.86 minutes. In the 200 meter race, Jackson was the top Eagle finisher at 29th with a time of 31.98 seconds. McKenzie’s Miranda Godard finished the event in 33.79 seconds, 32nd place, and Satchell was 35th, timed in 34.56 seconds. The 200 meter race was won by Kiersten Ochsner, Redmond, in 26.80 seconds. In her other events on the afternoon, Harlan finished 16th in the 800 meter run at 2:49.32 minutes behind Sister’s Zoe Falk who ran 2:21.85 minutes and the Eagle senior had a couple of 19th place finishes in the 100 meter race and the long jump. Harlan’s time in the 100 meter sprint was 14.46 seconds and the event was won by Madelyn Gunderson, Burns, in 13.24 seconds. Harlan jumped 13-06.50 feet in the long jump behind winner Catherine Clemens, Burns, who had a 15-09.50 leap on the day. Eagle teammate Espinoza jumped 11-00.50 feet, which was good for 27th place. McKenzie’s Van Pernis finished the discus event in 36th place with a toss of 49-00 feet and the event was won by Miranda Holt, Mitchell, with a throw of 104-00 feet. Other girls event winners were Madison Winn, Burns, in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:12.74 minutes, Kristen LaChapelle, Cascade, in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:47.21 minutes, Redmond in the 4X100 meter relay race, timed in 51.48 seconds, Kirstyn Groshong, Elmira, in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 50.86 seconds, Catherine Clemens, Burns, in the high jump, with a jump of 4-10.00 feet, and Chloee Sazama, LaPine, in the pole vault with a mark of 9-00.00 feet.

Nastasiuk Turns a Third in the Three Hundred Hurdles

McKenzie’s Alex Nastasiuk ran to a third place finish in the 300 meter hurdle event at the Sister’s Rotary Twilight Invitational meet last Friday, May 2. Nastasiuk was timed at 43.67 seconds and the event was won by Weston Tilton of Camas Valley in 42.07 seconds. Nastasiuk also anchored the Eagle 4X400 meter relay team along with teammates Jeff Bayer, Bailey Adams, and Drew Hamlow and the squad placed 7th timed in 3:58.50 minutes. The winning Elmira team finished in 3:36.19 minutes. Nastasiuk also threw the javelin 137-00 feet, good for 8th place behind winner Seth Nonnenmacher, Burns, who had a throw of 173-00 feet. Eagle teammate Trevor Spray threw the javelin 66-06 feet, a 57th place finish. And Nastasiuk was timed in 12.21 seconds in the 100 meter race, good for 18th place. Adams ran 12.67 seconds for 26th place and Hamlow was 12.82 seconds for a 28th place finish. The 100 meter winner, Kyle Tinnell of Redmond, ran the event in 11.22 seconds. Eagle Hamlow ran the 800 meter run in 2:18.21 minutes, finishing 11th on the day, Bayer followed in 15th place with a time of 2:19.75 minutes, and Adams was a 17th place finisher timed in 2:20.31 minutes. Trevor Lane, Southwest Christian, won the 800 meters in 2:05.72 minutes. Bayer also competing in the triple jump, finished 13th, with a leap of 33-08.00 feet. Redmond’s Tinnell won the event with a jump of 42-10.00 feet. Adams was the top Eagle long jumper in the meet with a leap of 16-09.00 feet followed by teammate Bayer at 26th who jumped 16-00.50 feet. The long jump was also won by Tinnell, Redmond, with a fine leap of 21-06.00 feet. McKenzie’s Spray ran the 200 meter race in 28.35 seconds, a 39th place finish behind winner Harley Gilpin, Elmira, who ran the event in 22.90 seconds. And Spray finished 50th in the discus with a toss of 61-04 feet and that event was won by Zach Wardwell, Elmira with a throw of 135-00 feet. Other event winners were Keegan Kriz, LaPine, in the 400 meter race, with a time of 52.57 seconds, Trevor Lane, Southwest Christian, in the 1500 meter run, timed in 4:19.45 minutes, Judon Bechtold, Sisters, in the 3000 meter run, with a time of 9:46.66 minutes, Austin McNichols, Lowell, in the 110 meter hurdles, with a time of 15.61 seconds, and the Elmira 4X100 meter relay team, which was timed in 44.08 seconds. Bo Highburger, Elmira, won the shot put, with a winning toss of 46.03.50 feet, Patrick Bladom, Cascade, won the high jump, clearing 6-02.00 feet, and Justin Petz, LaPine, claimed the pole vault with a winning height of 14-06.00 feet.

Special District 3 Baseball Update

McKenzie’s Casey Mitchell, Bailey Adams and Eric Huffman are playing baseball this spring for Lowell and the team (Lowell/Mohawk/McKenzie) is currently in third place in the League standings with 3 wins and 6 losses. The team has an 8-8 overall record. Monroe (8-1, 18-4) 3rd ranked in the OSAA State 2A/1A polls, holds a slim lead over 8th ranked Toledo (7-1, 15-2). The two teams meet on Tuesday, May 6, at Monroe, and the contest could well determine the League championship, pending upsets in the remaining season. The rest of the League is chasing third place and that battle should prove interesting as well with Oakridge (2-7, 5-12) and Siletz Valley (2-7, 2-9) both pressuring Lowell/Mohawk/McKenzie. The three rivals all have three League games remaining on their schedule. Lowell/Mohawk/McKenzie faces the two League leaders as well as Siletz Valley, all teams that have defeated them earlier this season. Two teams from the League will qualify for the 16-team State Playoffs. With the District playoffs looming, all remaining League games have an elevated degree of importance in regards to post season playoff seeding.
