Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into a Sunday afternoon fatal traffic crash on Highway 20 just east of the Santiam Summit. One lane of the highway was open at 5 pm. on 5/18, but traffic was delayed.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 12:35 p.m, the driver of a 2008 Ford Focus traveling on Highway 20 near milepost 81 lost control on the wet roadway and struck the guardrail on the south side of the highway. The Ford continued into the eastbound lane where it was struck by a 2009 Toyota Camry, which was then hit in the driver's door by a 2009 Toyota sport utility vehicle.
The Toyota Camry's driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Numerous other occupants of the involved vehicles were injured, some critically. All the injured were transported by Air Life and ground ambulances from Sisters and Camp Sherman areas to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment.
OSP troopers from Bend, Madras and Gilchrist offices responded to the scene.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District, ODOT, and medics from a National Guard unit traveling through the area.
The highway was closed until injured persons were transported from the scene. One lane in both direction is reported open.
