Make the McKenzie Connection!
By Dan Purkey
When you bring together local, hardworking, blue collar, rural farmers who grow vegetables and fruits with no pesticides; you have just described the Organic Redneck Growers! As a few customers have noted: “Friendly staff with AMAZING produce and honey!!!....Nothing like fresh vegetables and …great fruit selection…”
Family owned, Jack Richardson’s step-father and mother (Douglas and Carol) and siblings began organic farming years ago in Cottage Grove. In 1996, they bought 20+ acres along the McKenzie River. Subsequently, Jack bought an additional 5 acres to cultivate blueberries. With Mom still active and living on the farm, plus Jack’s girlfriend (Hayley) by his side and a great team, the farm’s reputation and growth have been consistent; leaving Jack little time to bake pies for his crew, paddle down the McKenzie or draw cartoons!
When you arrive, visit the earthen farm stand, stocked with vegetables, fruits and honey; and (for some of the months) operating on an honor system! During the summer, wander around and pick your own blueberries! Sign up for the “Weekly Box of Vegetables” at ogredneck.com. Based upon your requests, for 20 weeks they will prepare a box of vegetables (7-10 items) and recipes. The program begins in June.
Mark your calendars NOW for August 18th, and come to the “Melon Ball!” This event is a mega melon celebration, with 22 to 60 different melons (watermelons, cantaloupes, etc.) to taste and buy. Bring your entire family and enjoy the celebration!
Come, visit, partake of the goods and eat healthy! 44382 McKenzie Hwy., Leaburg. Office: 541-896-3928. [email protected]. Open April 27th until Christmas - 9 to 6 daily.
