Eagle Boys Fall To Siletz Valley And Triangle Lake
Pick Up Non-League Win At C.S. Lewis Academy
The Eagle Boys Basketball team seems to be a bit streaky this season. After losing their first ten games of the season, the McKenzie Boys broke through with a streak of three victories. Then enter Eddyville Charter, the current and undefeated leader of the Mt. West League (6-0), which set the upstart McKenzie team on its heals at home (January 9) with a 21-56 hoops education clinic.
This past week, the Eagles responded with a close 48-55 loss on the road court test of the Siletz Valley Warriors and a not so close 39-58 loss at home to the fast breaking Lakers of Triangle Lake. A Friday road trip to C.S. Lewis Academy up in Newberg threw an anchor on the new 3 game skid with a 51-42 win and now the Eagles are working on the positive.
Against Siletz Valley, Rhys Hamlow and Allen Acevedo led the Eagle offense with 12 points scored each and both also shared the highest rebounds earned, 6. Acevedo also finished with 3 assists and 3 steals and Hamlow had 2 assists and steals. Noah Prado scored 8 points and a rebound, Jacob Norlund added 5 points and 4 boards, Masonn Burton finished with 4 points, a rebound and an assist, Amir Enfield scored 6 points with 1 steal, and Will Meister scored 1 3 point shot, had 1 rebound and 2 steals.
The Warriors and Eagles were tied up 13 all at the end of the first quarter and McKenzie held a slim 29-25 lead at halftime. But Siletz dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 12-5 and again in the fourth quarter, 20-16, thus sealing the deal 57-50.
McKenzie has been working on its full court press all season and at times has effectively disrupted their opponent’s offense. The Lakers turned the tables on the Eagles showing off a tight full court defense of their own and showing off a fast break, leak out style offense that simply out ran the young Eagle defense. Triangle Lake built a 12-9 first quarter lead and a 29-20 margin at the half. Third quarter score finished out with a 41-30 Laker lead and the visitors outscored McKenzie 17-9 in the final quarter to earn the rout.
Masonn Burton finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and hauling in 11 rebounds with 2 assists. Amir Enfield finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, an assist and a steal. Aytan Munoz-Brown added 6 points and 2 rebounds, Will Meister scored 4 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist, while Allen Acevedo and Rhys Hamlow each added 2 points. Acevedo also finished with 2 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal and Hamlow had 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.
There were no stats at press time for the non-league C.S. Lewis Academy game. C.S. Lewis Academy is a member of the Casco League.
McKenzie Girls Basketball Suffers Three More Losses
It has been a long time since the Lady Eagles have tasted victory on the court, clear back on December 6. That was a 43-35 win over the Stanfield Junior Varsity. Since then, the Eagles have suffered through 11 straight losses. Last week, McKenzie lost to Triangle Lake at home, 28-60.
The Eagles did not play the previous Tuesday, as Siltez Valley does not field a Girls Varsity this season. Then, on Friday, January 17, the Eagles lost on the road to C.S. Lewis Academy, 13-57. No stats were available at press time. McKenzie's record thus far this season is 0-4 in Mt. West League play and 1-12 overall.
